Muslim Apex Body condoles Arjun Singh

New Delhi (5 March 2011):  The Working President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan said here today that the sudden death of the Congress stalwart Shri Arjun Singh has come as a painful shock to the Muslim community in the country. Shri Arjun Singh was a great secular and visionary leader who firmly stood by the Muslim community during the last two decades of the Hindutva onslaught. As Union HRD minister, he took marked interest in the promotion of education among Muslims in particular and the downtrodden in general. He detoxified the effects of saffronisation inflicted upon textbooks and the educational system by his predecessor. He went out of his way to help Muslim educational institutions like Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia and played a crucial role in the promotion of Urdu, modernization of madrasas. He created the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions to oversee the established of management such institutions. Dr Khan added that Shri Arjun Singh was a true believer in secularism, cultural pluralism and communal harmony and championed the empowerment of the poor and bravely fought against the communal forces.
